Wrought iron signboard in the shape of a rooster, 18th century, l. 70 cm, Provenance: archaeological find from Maastricht (excavated in the 1990s in a garden near the city park by the river Meuse), possibly related to the Herberg de Rode Haan (The inn had special lodging for the drivers or passengers of the barges, that sailed the Meuse. Next to the inn were stables for the pack animals. It owed its name to the many bloody cockfights that were held there. The inn was well known in Sint Pieter and the surrounding area, especially for the nice cool beer that was served here. donated)
